TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – June 22, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — The Cherokee Nation’s tribal complex in Tahlequah is undergoing some major renovations, including a 31,550-square-foot second story on the west end of the building to create space for the tribe’s growing workforce.

The W.W. Keeler Tribal Complex was last renovated in 1992, and with the addition the building will be about 117,000 square feet. Excluding health centers, the Cherokee Nation employs 2,250 people. Only about 400 employees work in the tribe’s main complex due to space.

More than 150,000 visitors also pass through the complex each year for tribal services or to see the tribe’s government. The new space will alleviate congestion for both employees and tribal citizens.

“We are investing in the future of our tribe by making some long overdue improvements to the Cherokee Nation’s tribal complex. It’s been more than 20 years since we made quality improvements to our tribal headquarters, and it’s greatly needed,” said Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Bill John Baker. “We are expanding and adding more space to house our employees and make visits to our tribal complex easier for citizens seeking services. Over the years, our staff has grown as we keep expanding programs and services that benefit Cherokee people.”

A canopy will be built over the main entry of the complex to help shelter people as they enter and exit.

Other renovations include the installation of a new, more energy-efficient HVAC system and a new pitched metal roof over the single story portion of the complex to match the second floor addition.

“Historically, the Cherokee Nation has been a good steward of financial resources, and these infrastructure upgrades are no different. The expansion and improvements are smart investments because they will have a positive impact on so many Cherokee Nation citizens for years and years,” said Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin Jr. “The renovations at the complex will only increase Cherokee pride.”

Architectural firm Childers Architect designed the W.W. Keeler Complex renovation project for the Cherokee Nation. The company also designed Three Rivers Health Center and Vinita Health Center.

Officials have not yet determined which departments will be located on the second floor addition. The project is expected to be complete by next summer.
