Housing Authority accepting college housing applications in July, August

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – July 20, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — The Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation will accept applications for fall semester college housing assistance July 27–Aug. 7.

The application can be downloaded at http://www.hacn.org/.

“The College Housing Assistance Program is a small but meaningful way the Housing Authority can help students achieve their goal of a higher education,” said Gary Cooper, executive director of the Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation. “Students have enough to worry about while going through college. A nice, affordable place to live should not be one of them.”

To qualify, a student’s permanent address must be inside the Cherokee Nation’s tribal jurisdiction, but that student may attend college anywhere in the United States.

The College Housing Assistance Program provides up to $1,000 per semester to low-income Native American students. The program helps 125 students with safe and affordable housing while they attend college and is funded through the Native American Housing Assistance and Self Determination Act (NAHASDA).

Eligibility requirements are as follows:

Seeking first bachelor’s degree

Enrolled full time

Citizen of a federally recognized tribe

Must have a permanent address in the Cherokee Nation’s 14-county jurisdiction

Must participate in the Cherokee cultural curriculum while in the program

Meet NAHASDA guidelines

Priority will be given to Cherokee Nation citizens and students who were awarded funds the previous semester.
